One of the best known colours from the RAL colour spectrum is without doubt the shade RAL 3020, or “Traffic red”. The nomenclature isn´t a random choice and also indicates one of the main uses of this colour. Due to its signal character through its striking, bright red tone, the RAL colour 3020 is used particularly frequently in road traffic. In other words, where good visibility of warnings or prohibition signs is important, even life-saving. Thus, the red colour component of official traffic signs and also the basic paintwork of many German fire engines are executed in “Traffic red”. Furthermore, the colour is very well known to rail passengers. Since 1996, 3020 from the RAL spectrum has been an identification colour in the corporate identity of Deutsche Bahn. The locomotives as well as the decorative strips of the IC and ICE carriages are painted in “Traffic red”.
